This piece was carved by local Rotorua artist Tamaora Walker and was designed to represent New Zealand's only native land mammal the pekapeka (bat). Pekapeka motifs are believed to symbolise spiritual protection and guardianship and with two outward-facing heads connected through one body, the symmetry of this piece creates a harmonious sense of balance and stability. Beautiful tones of deep forest green to white cloudy hues flow across the piece, and the inlaid eyes are crafted from paua shell.

Manaia

Manaia

A messenger and spiritual guardian of the sky, earth and sea. The Manaia brings balance and protection to those you love most.

Pounamu Manaia

Believed to move freely between the spirit and human world, the manaia is a mythological creature, greatly respected in Māori culture.

Bringing balance and protection

The profile of a manaia is commonly thought to depict the head of a bird, a tail of a fish, and the body of a man, representing the balance between earth, sky, and sea. What manaia traditionally meant to Māori remains somewhat a mystery, but commonly it is considered that they are magical creatures and spiritual kaitiaki (guardians) of things worth protecting. Today, pounamu manaia are gifted between loved ones for protection and worn to ward off evil.
