The directions of each koru represent acknowledging the past, present and future. That our values is what grounds who we are and of which never wavers through your journey in life. The painting is also inspired by the Māori legend on the origins of pounamu. Where Waitaiki was captured and forever transformed into pounamu by the taniwha, Poutini.
About the artist, Ariana Mali Tuielu
Ariana expresses her passion for her culture through her paintings. Through the artistic use of acrylic and oil paints, she strives to physically encapsulate the wairua (spirit) and values of te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) alongside her Pasifika roots.
The idea that so much emotion and spiritual enlightenment can be invoked from one picture is a motivating factor. "E ia kavea au taku folauga o te olaga. Mata ki matāmatagi. The winds of Matāmatagi (Fakaofo) carry me in my journey in life".
Ariana works in our Rotorua store and has ties to Ngāi Tuhoe, Waikato Tainul and Ngäti Whakaue.
