The star Matariki is the whaea (mother) of the other eight stars in the cluster. This star is connected to well-being, good fortune, and health, and when it is seen high and bright in the night sky it denotes peace and good luck. The tiki form is seen as being above all other forms, and Tamaora uses this concept to symbolise Matariki being the mother. Eight stars and koru are carved into this design to represent Matariki holding her children. Matariki is placed in the centre of the cluster, guiding her children across the sky night after night.

This piece is part of our Matariki Collection and will be on exhibit in our Rotorua studio until 3rd July 2022. Hei Tiki

Hei Tiki

The Hei Tiki represents the human form and one's ancestors. Traditionally passed from parent to child or used for protection and good luck. It links the past, present and future.

Pounamu Tiki

Passing down through generations of whanau (family), the mana (prestige) and korero (stories) of the Hei Tiki grow, forming lasting connections with tūpuna (ancestors) and bringing knowledge and protection.

A Hei Tiki is an image carved in human form

Thought to represent the human form, Hei Tiki are a complex form, and one of the most challenging to shape by hand, with New Zealand pounamu typically being used for their creation. The form is deemed to be one of the highest achievements of early pounamu artistry and today's jade carvers take great care in protecting the culturally iconic figure in their work.
