Born in Christchurch, Brent grew up all over the South Island. Coming from a big working-class family his first carving experiences were with wood, eventually leading him to make flutes and other instruments, before discovering jade. Nature informs his artistic practice and he enjoys pushing inventive boundaries, believing jade is too precious and finite to be taken for granted and should be reserved for genuine heartfelt art.
